Aion Review

The Aion team tried to copy the gameplay of a Korean MMO while still making the game more eastern so that WoW players aren’t alienated too much. Let me say that they achieved that goal. It is the whore of MMOs, trying to give something fun to every player that tries it.

The gameplay is targetted, meaning that to attack you need to click and focus on a single monster/player. WASD walking and a few userbars for skills. At the begining you will mostly be doing PvE. But the farther the game goes, the more the gameplay will be PvP centric, ending as mostly PvP only. The game is not instanced, you will meet players randomly everywhere, but all the zones are separated. You cannot walk of fly from one to another. There is a 8 character limit TOTAL, meaning 8 characters by account, and not by server. This might hit you hard when you realize that the best items ingame need 5 characters on the same server, meaning that if you choose a side (Elyos or Asmodian) you essentially have to be loyal to that side AND server on that account. You usually have enough money when you get to a point where you need new spells or equipment.

Main quests are linear and repetitive, but thats how Every MMO is. :D They also contain cinematics so that you get a more immersive questing experience. For some dungeons you will still need the Tank-Healer-DPS-Magic combo most RPGs use. Crafting, Grinding and Socializing is what you will do in this game, and for the PvE players we are here at tech wub, aion_poster we think it is worth it to pay for this game, until you finish your character and get bored with the game. For PvP players, this will be the best game they will ever play, even if the Aerial fighting is a sham. Combat in itself is mostly pressing the button, then chain a second attack and then wait for the cooldown to let you repeat that process. One great thing is that buffs last from 30 mins to an hour.

The graphics are awesome. Environments are submersive, weather effects are realistic, and the characters are great. This makes exploration the best part of Aion, because the world is huge. The Elyos (Good) are usually pretty and more human looking, while the Asmodian (Evil) usually sport a more Cool and Beastial look. Character customisation is detailed, with sliders and color grids. The chat system recognises what you are saying and makes you do the proper emote like laughing when you say lol and dancing like michael jackson when you say *dance*.

Each zone has it’s theme music. Most fit well with the zone. The speech from players when attacking and casting skills are just weird, they sound like pure gibberish, like someone sneezing, or someone “moaning”, which may disturb some people.

The crafting lets you create items that are similar in strenght with rare loots, and it makes you level, so most types of gameplay will make you advance ingame. And you can skip grinding for items by doing “work orders” to learn how to do it.

There is also a monthly magazine that will give a code each month to redeem an exclusive ingame item. Availlable digitally only (for now).

The game is availlable in English, French and Spanish.

In conclusion, This game will feel awesome to PvP fans, but it will only last a few months for PvE fans.
